You will find lots of official info here.  The timetable and venue is wrong.  This is done by the administration to check out how bright you are.  I often don't find the venue until the last week of semester.  The correct venue is given at the bottom of this page.

OBJECTIVES

This course introduces or further explores current issues in Artificial Intelligence and cognitive science.  There is a strong emphasis on theoretical and foundational issues, and students are required to research and think about these issues for themselves.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION

This course is about current issues in Artificial Intelligence and its complementary discipline, cognitive science.  Artificial Intelligence tries to build intelligent systems.  Cognitive science tries to understand intelligence and cognition through computational modelling.

CONTENT

Content varies from year to year, and is decided in discussion at the beginning of the semester.  Students are expected to have a good undergraduate understanding of issues in Artificial Intelligence, so that they can reflect on these issues at greater depth in this course.  This is not a programming course, but it will be assumed, as a rule, that students have written medium size AI programs of about 1000 lines.  Issues covered in previous years, which may be revisited, include:

ORGANISATION AND TEACHING METHODS

One 2 hour seminar per week (13 in total).  Students are required to read and constructively criticize recent work by leading figures in the field.  Students take it in turns, on a weekly basis, to lead a seminar on material they have been given to read, to critically comment on it, and to do their best to keep the discussion alive.  The atmosphere is relaxed and informal, so it's not as demanding as it sounds!

ASSESSMENT

Assessment Item Length Weighting Due date
Essay At least 4000 words 100% about end week 14

The topic for the essay will be the student's choice, from material covered in the course during the semester.  Students are encouraged to submit a draft and to discuss it with the Convenor.

TEXTS AND SUPPORTING MATERIALS

These vary from year to year.  Where possible, students will work through the draft of a book, and/or drafts of papers, written by a senior figure or figures in the field, prior to its publication.  This introduces students to the dynamics and interchange of ideas within the research community.
